Acid Reflux

acid reflux

Acid reflux is the father-of-all-heartburns! Why? Because in severe cases, acids from the stomach may damage the inner lining of the food pipe permanently, adding to the misery of your daily existence. It reportedly affects one in every ten adults in the US on a daily basis! Let’s see what this condition is, how it happens and cialis 40 mg online what are its natural cures.

What is acid reflux?

In medical parlance acid reflux disease is called gastro esophageal reflux disease or GERD in short. Though it’s termed a disease, this affliction doesn’t generally involve any viruses or bacteria. It occurs when strong stomach acids back up into the food pipe, causing acute inflammation of its inner lining. If this persists, it can cause permanent damage. However, it’s not the stomach acid alone, but pepsin and bile too that may injure the food pipe.

The bad news is acid reflux is not a temporary phase, but a chronic condition. Once it begins, you can get saddled with it for a lifetime. So much so that if you happen to discontinue the medicines for healing this chronic condition, it would recur within a few months!

Acid reflux causes and symptoms

The cause of acid reflux depends much on your lifestyle. If you suffer from this condition carry out some lifestyle changes. If you smoke, give up smoking; if you’re obese, shed weight; keep alcohol away; eat small meals; wear loose-fitting clothes and don’t lie down for at least three hours after a meal. Pregnancy may also cause this affliction. Foods that cause this condition include citrus fruits, chocolate, caffeine, garlic, onions, mint flavorings, fatty, spicy and fried foods. Also tomato-based foods, like spaghetti sauce, chili and pizza can cause it.

Its symptoms may be hoarseness; needing to clear the throat repeatedly; getting bitter stomach fluid into the mouth; difficulty in swallowing food or liquid; and wheezing or coughing at night. The symptoms worsen after eating or when bending over or lying down.

Preventing acid reflux

Before looking for natural or home remedies for acid reflux, let’s see what can be done to prevent this condition:

a. Sleep with your head at least eight inches higher than your stomach to prevent stomach acids from entering the food pipe.

b. Eat six small meals instead of three large ones. Avoid constipation at all costs, as pushing to relieve will also push the stomach acids upwards.

c. Don’t bend over or do exercises immediately after eating.

d. Lie on your left side to keep the stomach below the food pipe to prevent stomach acids from entering.

e. Avoid stress and anger.

I have R.A. and have been searching for not ONLY homeopathic remedies for symptoms but also remedies to get me OFF the Prilosec and similar brands. I have been reading about pickle juice… well much to my pinched nosed chagrin I had only 4 ounces today and maybe it’s a coincidence, but my heartburn is gone. I instructed my Dad to keep all pickle juice handy (I go to his house to fudge his food during my lunch hour from work) and I also can my own veg. Boatloads of pickles are now on my list. As to whether it helped my RA symptoms, time will tell. I also bought local made honey and some cider vinegar for a morning regiment (local honey helps with allergies too). I am full of pills so more “supplements” for me…we’ll see how this goes!

Cold water will dilute the acid, but that’s only a temporary solution. (Adding acid should not help, like drinking pickle juice, but hey, if it works…!) Sitting up straight, lying in bed with head elevated about 30 degrees with pillows, and most of all, losing weight! That’s my issue–being chunky pushes up on the stomach and the contents can leak up into the esophagus. So–dilute, sit up straight, drop a few pounds…. Good to know about the prilosec–I wasn’t aware of that, thanks…

  18. Christine A Johnson Says:

Forgot one…. Eat smaller meals. Overeating overfills and pushes contents up… and there you have it, reflux.

  29. Ed Says:

Hello everyone. I have GERD and have been on medications for the past 10 years or so (prevacid, nexium, aciphex, you name it)lately they stopped working or I overdid it with coffee, chocolate and alcohol. I’m in healthcare myself, so, after doing research (which I should’ve done a long time ago) I learned that all h2blockers and ppi inhibitors have side effects such as osteoporosis ( due to low calcium absorption ) and vitamin B 12 deficiency . So , I decided to come off meds and go on a diet. Smaller meals, less fat, no spicy food, chocolate, coffee or alcohol. By the way for those who don’t know and want to come off meds expect a rebound effect. Your acid level has been suppressed for a while and when you stop medications, body is confused and throws extra acid, more than it did ever before. It’s important to taper medications first. If you are taking it every day, try taking it every other day for a week then every 2 days for a week , every 3 days and then stop.
To get completely normal acid production after medications might take up to 3 months ( according to some study I read). But I would highly recommend following up with your GI doctor and getting annual endoscopy ( may be done every 6 months if needed) you want to make sure your esophageal irritation didn’t get worse…
Regarding remedies: to help healing ulcers, drink a glass of buttermilk with a table spoon of vegetable oil in it before bedtime. This regimen should be taken for no longer than 6 weeks. You can repeat it again after few week break…
    Good luck!

Manuka hone is another awesome product. I take 10+ formula. It rather expensive, a bottle/ can costs $35-45 depending on formula…

  31. Ron Davis,C.H.H.C. Says:

Some years ago this condition was known as indigestion, which is the insufficiency, not the over production, of acid. Reflux was rarely ever heard of until the drug companies invented this new disease.
When digestive acid is low you get the same symptoms. One of the treatments listed is Apple Cider Vinegar, which “increases” the acid content in your stomach. You can also use a “Full Spectrum” Digestive Enzyme pill to help break down foods in the stomach. These are generally regarded as Safe, GRAS even at moderate doses.
So I suppose some will say. “This can’t be right.” It can’t be right because you’ve been listening to the medical doctors and the PPI (proton pump inhibitor) commercials on TV. When you go to the doctor, does he ever “measure” the amount of acid in your stomach, or does he simply prescribe a PPI pill? ($$$$)Well?… I can’t hear you!
Much of digestive malaise comes from the body’s inability to digest protein and the severe over consumption of carbohydrates. If you take a PPI or antacid you inhibit the production of Hydrochloric acid which is manufactured by the body and is ‘required for the digestion of protein’ and the elimination of intestinal parasites, as well as proper immune function and the absorption of certain essential nutrients. Undigested protein turns into a gut full of undigested, fermented junk that is reabsorbed in the small intestine and causes Auto Immune disease. This rotting, undigested junk is also what you are feeling when you Think you have reflux.
Much of the pain very often is the result of a H.pylori infection, that by the way is exacerbated by the use of PPIs, aspirin and non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs.(OTC Pain killers)You can use use Rhubarb or a small amount of “Food Grade’ Hydrogen Peroxide for the pain caused by H.pylori. PPIs also cause C difficile bacteria, pneumonia, calcium and magnesium deficiencies, bone breaks and osteoporosis, etc.,plus the side effects listed by the pharma company.
Salivary amylase is only the beginning of the carbohydrate digestive process. The pancreas cannot manufacture enough amylase to digest “Too Many” carbohydrates. Over consumption of carbohydrates manifest as undigested carbohydrates in the large intestine. The body senses this and sequesters water from the blood into the large intestine to rid the intestine of this problem. This causes an over abundance of water which manifests as diarrhea.Any other questions?

  33. Tiffany Says:

Dealing with acid reflux and heartburn sucks. Prescription acid reflux medications are only meant to be taken for up to six weeks, and over the counter heartburn medications have their own list of side effects. I’ve had severe acid reflux for 9 years and have tried almost everything under the sun for it. I’ve also had the Nissan wrap for GERD. Even with all that I’ve tried, the best remedy for me has been Acidgone (You can find it at Moon Grass Health). It’s all natural, and works by absorbing stomach acid and neutralizing it. Acidgone also has some natural anti-inflammotories in it to sooth the throat and stomach. When taking Acidgone, I get relief within a couple of minutes. Best of all, it doesn’t interfere with digestion. I’ve been taking it for six years, now. I’d highly recommend it for a natural acid reflux and heartburn remedy.

I had ar for 16 years. used to take zantac for it, otc version. I started taking apple cider vinegar about 5 years ago and now its nearly gone. moved to a place with well water and had to switch to baking soda. I used to get flare ups several times a week.

  35. itay Says:

now that’s just stupid. yes! skinny people get acid reflux. And even if it was just a disease for people who are overweight, how does “just lose the extra weight” help anyone?

  36. Jude Says:

I have been taking Prilosec for many years and have spent miserable nights several times a week sitting up until 4 am with acid reflux, popping tums & drinking ice water.  This has been going on for years, despite the Prilosec, often supplemented in the evening with Zantac.

A friend showed me a book that had just a passing mention of raw potato for stomach problems.  Hmm, I could do that!  Raw potato didn’t appeal to me but I found I could nuke a half a red potato for about 20 seconds and it wasn’t bad.  Still crunchy, and only slightly cooked.

I started eating a half of a lightly microwaved red potato every morning and within a few days started noticing a big difference.  Now, after about a month, I’ve only had to get up one time in the night and that was after eating buttered popcorn at the movies and going out for pizza afterwards at 8 pm!  I’ve even been able to eat chili with no problem, something I haven’t been able to do for years.  Gravy?  No problem.  This is just unheard of!

One unexpected bonus is the return of that trigger that tells me I’m getting full. I haven’t had that in a long time.  It would kick in an hour after I ate and then I would feel bloated.  I like this.  I am eating a lot less because I now know when I’m starting to get full.

I’m working on getting off the Prilosec now since long-term use has such bad potential side effects (osteoporosis, stomach cancer).  Still taking it every other day, and taking a Zantac with dinner as a precaution for now.  I’ll probably keep up the raw potato for a while even after getting off the medications.

I am so happy with the results, I just had to tell somebody!
