    I used Prilosec for years and developed colitis, which is and intestinal disease. I started reading some books on natural cures and discovered the most of the drugs for acid reflux are to be used only temporally. Prilosec recommends use for only 2 weeks then discontinue for 6 months. Strange they sell it in a 48 day pack. I stopped using it and the colitis went away.     I drink about 3 oz of Aloe Vera Juice mixed with OJ or some other juice. The Aloe Vera Juice doesnt taste pleasant but if you mix it with another juice, it helps. Although OJ is acidic, the Aloe works almost immediately and you don’t feel a flare up.

    I have R.A. and have been searching for not ONLY homeopathic remedies for symptoms but also remedies to get me OFF the Prilosec and similar brands. I have been reading about pickle juice… well much to my pinched nosed chagrin I had only 4 ounces today and maybe it’s a coincidence, but my heartburn is gone. I instructed my Dad to keep all pickle juice handy (I go to his house to fudge his food during my lunch hour from work) and I also can my own veg. Boatloads of pickles are now on my list. As to whether it helped my RA symptoms, time will tell. I also bought local made honey and some cider vinegar for a morning regiment (local honey helps with allergies too). I am full of pills so more “supplements” for me…we’ll see how this goes!

    Cold water will dilute the acid, but that’s only a temporary solution. (Adding acid should not help, like drinking pickle juice, but hey, if it works…!) Sitting up straight, lying in bed with head elevated about 30 degrees with pillows, and most of all, losing weight! That’s my issue–being chunky pushes up on the stomach and the contents can leak up into the esophagus. So–dilute, sit up straight, drop a few pounds…. Good to know about the prilosec–I wasn’t aware of that, thanks…

    I was told I have an ulcer in June. Took Sucrafate and Prevacid and it worked for a month. Now it’s back with a vengance! So my chest hurts and my throat feels like it’s closing in sometime’s. I have read all of the suggestion’s but, I dont know which will work for me. ANYTHING people??

    Hello everyone. I have GERD and have been on medications for the past 10 years or so (prevacid, nexium, aciphex, you name it)lately they stopped working or I overdid it with coffee, chocolate and alcohol. I’m in healthcare myself, so, after doing research (which I should’ve done a long time ago) I learned that all h2blockers and ppi inhibitors have side effects such as osteoporosis ( due to low calcium absorption ) and vitamin B 12 deficiency . So , I decided to come off meds and go on a diet. Smaller meals, less fat, no spicy food, chocolate, coffee or alcohol. By the way for those who don’t know and want to come off meds expect a rebound effect. Your acid level has been suppressed for a while and when you stop medications, body is confused and throws extra acid, more than it did ever before. It’s important to taper medications first. If you are taking it every day, try taking it every other day for a week then every 2 days for a week , every 3 days and then stop.
    To get completely normal acid production after medications might take up to 3 months ( according to some study I read). But I would highly recommend following up with your GI doctor and getting annual endoscopy ( may be done every 6 months if needed) you want to make sure your esophageal irritation didn’t get worse…
    Regarding remedies: to help healing ulcers, drink a glass of buttermilk with a table spoon of vegetable oil in it before bedtime. This regimen should be taken for no longer than 6 weeks. You can repeat it again after few week break…

    Some years ago this condition was known as indigestion, which is the insufficiency, not the over production, of acid. Reflux was rarely ever heard of until the drug companies invented this new disease.
    When digestive acid is low you get the same symptoms. One of the treatments listed is Apple Cider Vinegar, which “increases” the acid content in your stomach. You can also use a “Full Spectrum” Digestive Enzyme pill to help break down foods in the stomach. These are generally regarded as Safe, GRAS even at moderate doses.

    Dealing with acid reflux and heartburn sucks. Prescription acid reflux medications are only meant to be taken for up to six weeks, and over the counter heartburn medications have their own list of side effects. I’ve had severe acid reflux for 9 years and have tried almost everything under the sun for it. I’ve also had the Nissan wrap for GERD. Even with all that I’ve tried, the best remedy for me has been Acidgone (You can find it at Moon Grass Health). It’s all natural, and works by absorbing stomach acid and neutralizing it.     I had ar for 16 years. used to take zantac for it, otc version. I started taking apple cider vinegar about 5 years ago and now its nearly gone. moved to a place with well water and had to switch to baking soda. I used to get flare ups several times a week.

    I have been taking Prilosec for many years and have spent miserable nights several times a week sitting up until 4 am with acid reflux, popping tums & drinking ice water.  This has been going on for years, despite the Prilosec, often supplemented in the evening with Zantac.

    A friend showed me a book that had just a passing mention of raw potato for stomach problems.  Hmm, I could do that!  Raw potato didn’t appeal to me but I found I could nuke a half a red potato for about 20 seconds and it wasn’t bad.  Still crunchy, and only slightly cooked.

    I started eating a half of a lightly microwaved red potato every morning and within a few days started noticing a big difference.  Now, after about a month, I’ve only had to get up one time in the night and that was after eating buttered popcorn at the movies and going out for pizza afterwards at 8 pm!  I’ve even been able to eat chili with no problem, something I haven’t been able to do for years.  Gravy?  No problem.  This is just unheard of!

    One unexpected bonus is the return of that trigger that tells me I’m getting full. I haven’t had that in a long time.  It would kick in an hour after I ate and then I would feel bloated.  I like this.  I am eating a lot less because I now know when I’m starting to get full.

    I’m working on getting off the Prilosec now since long-term use has such bad potential side effects (osteoporosis, stomach cancer).  Still taking it every other day, and taking a Zantac with dinner as a precaution for now.  I’ll probably keep up the raw potato for a while even after getting off the medications.

    I am so happy with the results, I just had to tell somebody!
